3 Ways I Make Workout DVD's Workout For Me

Workout DVD's can be all the rage.  The slick advertising has you thinking you'll look like those fitness models in no time.  And, it will be so much fun!

Think again.

Working out is uncomfortable.  And, it is supposed to be.  It wouldn't work if it wasn't.  But, it does make you feel good both mentally and physically.

DVD's programs like P90X, 21 Day Fix, Insanity and Jillian Michael's Total Body are all very different programs serving different market segments.  But, they are all the same in that they provide you with a structured approach to working out.  You don't have to come up with the program yourself.

Just hit play.

The structure takes away any need for you to have to come up the routine.  You follow along.  But, where it goes wrong for some people is trying to do it just like those fitness models.  It makes beginners give up too early to see results and the DVD's end up on the shelf collecting dust.

I have used DVD workouts for the last seven years and have found three ways to make them work well.

  1. Take Breaks.  Especially when you first get started.  Many of the exercises may be new to you and they will test you in ways you never been tested before.  If you're not keeping up.  Take a break.  If the exercise is one minute long and you're running out of gas at 30 seconds.  Take a break and rejoin if you can.  Otherwise wait for the next move.  As you improve you will be able to do more and make the whole minute.
  2. Modify, modify, modify.  I can't emphasis this one enough.  I truly think this is the key to succeeding with fitness DVD's.  In most videos, there is usually one of the models doing a modified version of the exercise.  You can even come up with some of your own modifications.  I have done this over and over again.  It has allowed me to be consistent and see results.
  3. Just do your best, not their best.  If you are not a professional fitness model, you can't expect to perform the exercises as well as they do.  Just do your best and try to improve each time.  Again, just stick with it.
That's it.  Simple and straight forward.  No one will see your breaks or modifications.  But, with the consistency they will see your best.  And, you will feel your best too!!

If you try these things and have any success, or not, please let me know.  Leave a comment below.

Thanks and just keep hitting play,

Sean
